I'd like to add a DVD drive.

In an effort to "add" a DVD drive to the mid-2011 Mac Mini, it seems that one might be able to put the guts of the new mid-2011 into the chassis of the previous generation. The speed of the mid-2011 with the DVD of the previous generation. Anyone know if this is possible?

I'm good with remote DVD sharing, I just want the mid-2011 Mac Mini to be the one with the DVD that everyone shares.

I'm not sure if putting the drive itself in the computer is the biggest obstacle. Cutting a slot in the case to slide the discs in, though, would be a doozy. Inside the machine looks very similar to the previous generation, and the only thing that might need modification in there is the plastic framework that holds the IR board/sensor.

I'd like to use the previous generation chassis with DVD slot already cut. Does the main board fit?

The boards have the same form factor, but some mounting locations are different. You should be able to fit a 2011 logic board with the 2011 speaker and Wi-Fi board inside the 2010 case. The only question is if it will be all be compatible.
