Why is my iMac working so slowly? 2012 iMac macOS Sierra 10.12.6

My machine is working very slowly and I am unsure why. Even loading a webpage in chrome or starting up spotify takes ages.

I have 787.24GB available of 999.35GB for storage. 8GB of memory installed. I have tried emptying the trash and some other things with no luck.

Any help would be great.

Start up in Safe Mode by holding down the Shift key on start up and let us know if your problem persists.

Ok, I will. Would you recommend doing that before running something like Malwarebytes?

I always do the things that don't cost first. Besides, it doesn't get much simpler.

So I gave it a shot. Things seem to be loading faster, but it is doing this weird "painting" behavior. The login screen was painting up the screen over and over, and each application I open is doing it as well. Even after the application has loaded. Websites appear blank as well. As if it cannot fully load. Safe mode seems worse right now

That sounds like a failing GPU. Hook up an external monitor and see if it is doing it there too.

I do not have an external monitor :/

Have you tried running an antivirus scan with malwarebytes or another program?

No I haven't. Would you recommend that program vs others?

crwdns2934271:0crwdnd2934271:0crwdne2934271:0

Malwarebytes is free and has worked well for me in the past
