Washer fills, drains & spins But won't agitate
I have a 1980’s Maytag LA482 Washer with a Helical Transmission. It fills then tries to agitate, But the transmission doesn’t lock so it moves like trying to slow spin. When I move to spin, It drains fine & starts to spin out. When it clicks to stop, The drum keeps spinning. I think the brake ass’y is broken, But don’t know for sure. How can I determine if the brake is out OR the transmission is out ? What parts are usual replacements if it is the brake ? Trans. is NLA. Unit worked fine until this & is a match to dryer, So I don’t want to replace if possible. I can do my own repairs. Thanks for the help !
Update (11/09/25)
It was a bad brake unit on the bottom. Replaced with a new one. Works fine.

Model is Maytag LA482. There are 2 versions. Mine has the Helical Trans. w/ the tall turquoise 4 hole agitator. I'm on Soc. Secur. retirement income so Can't afford a new one. Trying to fix this one. It's like the trans. moves on it's push stroke with nothing to lock it. THANKS Mayer.
