Is it possible to upgrade CPU from core i3-3225 to core i7-3770s

iMac early 2013 edu have i3-3225 CPU on board with 55w thermal profile

will core i7-3770s with 65w thermo profile works?

Well I know it and I have saw it already. Main question : will system board recognize CPU with higher thermal rating? And will it boot up with core i7-3770s or the same CPU , i5? Did somebody this upgrade?

Hi all and Dan,

today I opened up my Early 2013 iMac 21.5”, because it is having some problems with the display (or graphics) not turning on. I wanted to check if the CPU is socketed because there are many different answers online. I can confirm that the CPU is socketed, just like any other socketed CPU. I hope this helps many others who are having troubles with their iMacs and who are not able to find a clear answer about whether the CPU is socketed or not. I will be upgrading mine to a Core i7 3770 to have an upgrade and to (hopefully) resolve my issue.

Max - Was yours the EDU model? The regular i5 & i7 systems sold by Apple do in deed have a socketed CPU.

@danj Dan - Yes I have the EDU model, the Early 2013 i3 with EMC 2545. I replaced the CPU with the i7 3770 and it still posted so everything worked fine. The CPU socket doesn’t have a bracket/ lever but it is held in place by the heatsink. Unfortunately it didn’t fix my particular problem because I think that my display doesn’t receive power (it receives 0.1V at the display power cable when it’s turned on).

Sorry your EDU system has a soldered in CPU no CPU upgrades possible.

Everymac dot com says:

CPU socketed

The EDU mode is not quite the same as the Apple Store sold model (which was a custom order). Apple often times cheapens the system to the barebones to pull a few penny's more of profit on the EDU models.

And everymac didn't know it... strange, link that I pasted earlier is exactly for Edu model. And there is info on the page : CPU socketed.

Look at this listing

In description we can read

Socket type - 1155.

And CPU place covered by paper or something else. If it is soldered CPU why to do it? Usually this dids only if we want to protect contacts in empty socket from dust and dirt.

I hate for you to spend the effort and the cost of going through it.

But, if you must I guess you'll need to give it a try. Let us know if yours is so lucky to have a socket and the new CPU works

Well, if it was sold with i7 option, it might work, but you would need a really great thermal paste (like Arctic Cooling MX-4) to lessen throttling of this sucker, and be sure to connect and reattach everything properly (which means applying new thermal paste, screwing everything in such order as noted on cooling plates, , connecting power cable and turning on iMac for check that everything works when you connected everything, turning off and deattaching a power cable, applying new adhesive stripes for display, and then attaching display, fixing it, and then connecting power cable).

вопрос только один, делал ли кто-то это, замена на данной модели центрального процессора или не делал? если делал, то опознала ли его система и запустилась ли?

There is only one question, did someone do this, didn’t they replace the central processor on this model? if it did, then did the system recognize it and did it start?
