IR connector broken - do I need to repair or remove?

Hello!

I had what seems to be a classic error while upgrading my Mid-2011 Mac Mini hard drive to an SSD and broke my IR connector. I unfortunately didn’t grab a picture and don’t especially want take it apart again.

What I did was attempt to pry up the clip and 3/5 of the connector bay came up with it. So part of the bay is still attached, although one pin came off entirely, and the rest is just floating there.

From what I gather thus far in my reading, I can live without the IR connector as I don’t use a remote and don’t care about the on light.

My question is, however: am I going to cause a short or any ill-fate to my computer by just leaving this connector hovering above the spot it’s supposed to attach to the logic board? Do I need to either fix it or remove it entirely?

Thanks for your help!

Graham

@grajacu “am I going to cause a short or any ill-fate to my computer by just leaving this connector hovering above the spot it’s supposed to attach to the logic board? “ possibly, because things only hover for so long and then they sag and “could” cause issues down the road. It’s just not good practice to leave things hanging around. If you cannot repair the connector for whatever reason, I would at least use some electric tape etc. to shield it to prevent any possible issues.

I am so very happy to find out the connector i broke on my recently purchased Mac mini 2012 was actually just the IR connector! I can go on with my life without it. I use this for software development. I don’t need a stinking IR sensor! BTW, i purchased your $75 tool kit and absolutely love it. HIGHLY recommend it for the “almost professionals” like me out there. Also thank you iFixIt for having such a great business strategy in sharing repair into but selling tools.

Did the same thing today - broke the IR connector. As you said - not a big deal. And Fortunately I have a Flirc so can keep using IR anyway (to control Kodi for example) so no problem at all.

The connector on the board came off completely. The wired end is still intact - I just left if dangling as it didn’t seem likely to move and come into contact with anything.

Personally I would just remove it and go on with life. I believe the Mac will run just fine without it. After all, it’s just a mundane sensor that 70% of people don’t use anyways.

If it causing you problems like your pc is not performing in tip-top condition then remove it because it will not affect any hardware problem in your pc.

You will see in the new pc they don’t use IR connector anymore but if you want an IR connector then you can use USB infrared receiver

I did the same thing. It's a mystery to me where it unplugged from to start with. Mine works just fine without it. Don't worry.
