LED light won't turn off even when powered down!

My iPhone 4 recently got wet and now the LED stays on all the time, even when the phone is turned off. Everything else works fine. Is there a way to fix this without having to replace the whole phone?

that recently happened to my phone and I think that we as the people need to realize that the only reason we cannot open and dry out these phones are because Apple wants us totally dependent on them so that they can make more money. Its all about the benjamins.

also going to the settings for auto-lock and switching it to 1 minute will turn it off as well and keep it running normal again, its mainly water damage that seems to cause this

First, make sure the phone is COMPLETELY dry. I would take off the rear panel, disconnect the battery and leave it alone for several days. If you want, you can put it in a bag of rice to help soak up any moisture.

Try a soft reset of the phone. On your iPhone 4, press and hold both the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button for about ten seconds. The phone should restart.

If that doesn't work, try a restore.

It is a bad connection on the 2 prongs to the right of the camera lens. I took the back off and then with a small electrical screwdriver wobbled the connection. The light went dim and by further wobbling the light went off and has stayed off.

crwdns2934271:0crwdnd2934271:0crwdne2934271:0

Does the camera flash continue to work after using this technique? The two 'prongs' I see look like surface-mount capacitors to me. I can see how fiddling with those could break the circuit to the flash... never to be closed again.

crwdns2934271:0crwdnd2934271:0crwdne2934271:0

Yes....just jiggle the prongs very gently...not so much as to break them...that is what I had to do and it worked just fine. The light went out and everything works normal including the flash when needed. Hope this helps!

Sounds like your camera might have gotten shorted and is defective. Unscrew the two bottom screws and remove the back cover. Then remove the shield and you will have access to the iphone's rear camera. Its not that hard to replace and is available for a good price.

There are a few of these problems but no one else admitted that the phone got wet and dried out when this started.

Anyway mines been like this for 2 months since it go wet. It was also jailbroken but I really don't think that has anything to do with it.

I got put in the swimming pool with it in my back pocket. No other issues after it dried out.

I just upgraded to 5.0 iOS software upgrade and my light just went out. Hope it stays out but this is the 1st time it turned off.

I dropped my iPhone 4 which I am writing this with down the toiliot , was in there for about 4 seconds fully submerged , I quickly retrieved it and dried with a cloth , got cotton ear buds and dried charging terminal and earphone socket on top of phone , phone stayed on all the while , went to car and wedged phone into heater vent on dash and turned heating up for a at least 10 mins alternating between charging point and earphone socket side . Phone playing up big time couldn't enter pin , unlock wouldn't slide if it would unlock then couldn't phone anyone or msg , so I thought phones screwed what the !&^& lets give it a go , opened boot got can of wd40 and straw that comes with it and squirted a little into phone from both ends charging point and earphone socket end . After a while phone started to improve , let me enter pin and get into phone , first few calls I couldn't be heard , then that improved to being heard clearly , only fault is camera light is staying on all time , even when powered off , opened back of phone flipped battery over without disconnecting it wiped access wd40 off and blew dry phone with hair dryer , reassembled but light still on not a major issue if it wasn't draining battery. Oh had nothing else to hand do used wd40 , use at your own risk .

My phone was submerged in water for about 10 seconds (dont ask). I put it in a back of rice overnight and took the back off to inspect for residual moisture. It works perfectly except for the led staying on in a low power state. It went off for several weeks and then came back on all of a sudden. Apparently the water cause a short causing this problem. Solution - replace the part. As already noted... it is not difficult to do and there is a wealth of guidance on Youtube. If your phone is dated or battery life is dwindling, its not a bad idea to replace the battery at the same time. Hope this helps.

I was researching the web on this, trying to find a solution. it fritzed out the day before but somehow corrected itself. but then today the light came on while in my pocket. my leg was getting warm and i noticed the light wouldnt turn off. it killed my battery, and even still the light is on. after intensive research, and me not wanting to spend money on fixing it at the Apple store, Smacking it was a common solution to this. So i smacked it. a few times in the back up in the corner where the light is. nothing happend, light still on. but then i smacked once in the front opposite of where the light is, and it worked the light turned off.

Jeffychrn, please see and apply the method mentioned my Michael that he posted on November 3, 2014. If you've dried out the phone completely and the light is still coming on it more than likely that the two prongs next to the camera lens need to be wiggled to fix the bad connection. It worked for me just as it did for Michael. Perhaps this is the reason hitting around that area appears to help some people. But you might cause more harm than intended by hitting your phone too hard and causing more issues than the one you currently have. Hope this helps you too!

crwdns2934271:0crwdnd2934271:0crwdne2934271:0

My boyfriends son spilt some soda on his phone. I immediately turned the phone off and let it dry for over 24 hours. I should have put it in rice and let it dry for 48 hours as I've done before when i dropped my iphone in the toilet. Anyway, when we turned his phone on, the camera led light came on and wouldn't turn off. So, I downloaded a flashlight app from the app store, turned the flashlight on and then off again. It worked and the light stayed off. Made the mistake of letting it die and when we powered it back on, the light came back on and the app trick isn't working now. Leads me to believe we shorted something out, the battery life is awful and the phone gets hot in his pocket. I would suggest upgrading your insurance plan to one that covers water damage and then filing a claim through your carrier and sending it back.

I tried this a few times with the flash turned "on". It didn't work. Then, I turned the flash to "auto", covered the camera with my hand to make it dark and voila, it flashed and shut off after. Now, it's sitting in rice overnight. I went to the Apple store to ask them to open it so could dry out and they refused to do it. Their only solution was to buy a new phone.

I am now going to order a pentalobe screwdriver from Amazon so I can actually take the back off myself as needed.

I had this happen with my 4S after it fell in the bathtub and got wet. I retrieved it within less than 3 seconds, wrapped it in a towel and dried it off. In a panic I attempted to blow out any errant moisture with a hairdryer (no, no…). I also repeatedly powered the phone off and on (another no, no). The phone had remained on throughout the soaking and initial drying process. The only thing I noticed was some moisture under the glass in front of the rear camera lens. I kept a warm dryer on it until the moisture evaporated.

At some point I turned on the camera to test it and the LED remained lit. Even after powering the unit down, it remained lit. At first it was fully lit, and then over time it began to fade and remained lit dimly. Testing the flash feature, I could still get it to flash and using a Flashlight App I could also get it to strobe, but never turn off completely. All other features of the phone functioned fine. For what it's worth, upon inspection, only the headphone jack moisture exterior sensor was tripped, the power and (after removing the back plate) interior sensors were not red. I checked the camera connections, uninstalling the camera and putting it back in. Still the LED remained lit.

From researching online, I concluded that moisture had gotten into the camera and LED housing and there was a short keeping the LED lit. I ordered a new camera, disconnected the battery, installed the new camera and all appears to be fine!

What I'd do differently next time (had I had the tools): Immediately power down the phone after the first pat down with a towel. Open the back case and inspect the interior for moisture. I think heating the phone and blowing it out so much probably forced water deeper into the phone and ultimately compromised the LED. Had I just let it be and carefully dried it with the case open, I might have avoided shorting it out. A can of compressed air probably would have done the trick. I don't think much water had actually gotten inside, and it was just all the heat and evaporated water that was my real enemy.

Hope this helps someone.

Tried all the suggestions here but none of them worked and I was ready to bring it to the Apple store to replace the camera module. Two months ago my 4 got wet. I put it in a bag of rice for about 2 weeks (it didn't work, i kept checking). Finally, after the 2 weeks, the phone finally turned on, but the flashlight came on and wouldn't turn off. I powered down, did everything and nothing worked. Finally, on it's own, it turned off.........til about 3 days ago. It's back. I tried powering down, using the flashlight, holding the sleep/home buttons, taking a picture with the flash but nothing. It seems like this is an Apple defect. Does anybody have any other suggestions as to how to possibly turn it off? Thanks!
