Top screen dims when 3D is on - is it normal?

I've recently got an used 3DS XL. It's condition is kinda sub-meh but it works… except for its top screen which as the topic says, goes darker by almost 1 brightness level when 3D is turned on.

I'm not sure if it's normal or not as I don't have another console of the same model to compare with, but I'll ask here anyway just in case.
