I would like to fix my Dad's old 1940's Lionel train. orkin

I would like to fix my Dad's old 1940's Lionel train. It hasn't worked since the 1970's. I remember turning the switch on the Transformer back then and absolutely nothing happened. There are no Lionel repair shops nearby so how can I get this train running again?

@sue11fenimore77 give us some more information about what you are trying to do. Is there a single train (model etc.) that does not work or does everything not work? Do you have power coming from the transformer?

On the engine it says O Gage 224 if that makes any sense to you. I do have paperwork on the train, but I will have to do some searching to find it. I remember years ago plugging in the transformer flicking the switch and nothing happened. So I am going to test the transformer first and go from there. Hopefully, we can get this train running again. Thanks for your help!

I still have all the information that you sent me, but no, I haven't had time to work on it yet. Other projects (especially from work) keep popping up. I will have it fixed by next Christmas though, that's a promise.

@sue11fenimore77 see if this looks like it Lionel Train #224 "Lionel Lines" Steam Engine. The year would be circa 1945

Start by checking the setup and transformer. Here are some instructions about what needs to be connected where and has the details about the transformer on page 38

If you need to check the wiring on your locomotive, here is the wiring diagram for that.

Thank you very, very much! This is my Dad's train to a tee. Thanks for the picture, the booklet and the diagram. All will be very useful in getting my Dad's train back on the track. It may take me a little while to get it set up due to a heavy work week this week, but I'll let you know how it turns out when I do. Thanks again for your help. It is most appreciated!

Before troubleshooting the engine/train itself you need to be sure that your transformer is working correctly. You can find an inexpensive voltmeter (or often free with a coupon) from Harbor Freight stores. You need to have a basic understanding of electricity (and it goes without saying safety) to work on electrical equipment.

If you do not want to troubleshoot anything, you could try to replace either the locomotive or the transformer. The likely point of failure is the the transformer, though it could be the engine. You can find a lot of used equipment on ebay. Or you might find a local hobby shop that might could connect you with a local train hobbyist group that probably can get you up and running again. Good luck! And let us know what you find out!

Thanks for the excellent advise. I was thinking it had to be either the transformer or the engine. We do have a voltmeter here at the house (from Harbor Freight) that I can test the transformer with. If it is the engine, I will be sure to check out ebay or try to connect with a local train hobbyist group even if I have to go to Orlando to do it. Thanks so much for your help! Hopefully by next Christmas, we will have the old train running again under our tree.
