How do I get passed the grey boot up screen with apple logo?

PowerMac G4 dual drive

I have an older PowerMac G4 (dual drive) and it just recently starting freezing at boot up to the grey screen with apple logo... Won't go passed that. I tried zapping the pram, taking out the battery, (battery is back in), starting while holding shift key, option key but nothing works.

Not sure how to start up from a disc since the disc drive wont pop open ... how do I do that?

Any suggestions how to boot up to desk top? Really really need to get some files off this drive that are not backed up :)

Thanks in advanced!

Brian

Try starting up holding down the mouse button to open the optical drive.

I list your machine as a MDD as those were the only ones I can remember that had dual optical drives. Do you have a secondary boot hard drive?

Hi,

Yes its the mirror drive and the dual drive part of this machine is that it can still run the old OS9 before everything changed.

Anyway not sure what you mean by holding down the mouse button to open the optical drive..? You mean just simply click and hold down the mouse button while booting up? Not clicking on anything... just holding down the button?

Thanks

That's it. Hold down the mouse button while booting. The optical drive should open. Also try holding down the eject button (right above the delete key) on the keyboard during boot up.

Once you get the drive open, put your system installation disk in it and reboot holding down the "c" key.
