Revamped version of the iPhone 3G with faster processing speeds. Repair of this device is similar to the 3G, and requires simple screwdrivers and prying tools. Model A1303 / 8, 16 or 32 GB capacity / black or white plastic back.

iPhone 3GS doesn't respond to touch, need troubleshooting advice

A while ago I replaced the glass on my wife's iPhone 3GS, and it worked great (Thanks ifixit). Since then, the phone has taken another hit; the glass is cracked but not badly, but it doesn't respond to touch.

I did a power button + home button reboot, then checked connections 2, 3, and the other ribbon connection. Everything there seems ok.

So what next? Is there any good in doing a firmware reset? Should I just replace the glass again, or buy the whole display assembly? Is the phone itself a paperweight (dead board or connections), or needing to go back to Apple?

I want to make sure I'm doing stuff in the proper order and buying the right parts, Thanks for any advice up front.

I'd just replace the digitiser and glass again. It sounds like you broke it. Just because the glass is only slightly cracked doesn't mean the digitiser( which is glued to it pretty !%!# well) survived!Try the hard reset first but I'd buy the front panel (digitiser and glass)

I took another look after reading this, and the glass is cracked completely across about 1/4 inch from the top. I bet that's interfering with the signal getting to the digitizer. I'm going to order the glass, probably won't be able to change it out until next weekend but I'll let you know how it turns out.

Thank you both very much, hopefully that does it!

Try a hard reset:

Hard Reset

Note: These steps will delete the data off the phone, but you can Restore data using your computer.

Press and hold both the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button for about ten seconds. The apple logo will appear and your iPhone 3G S will be reset.

Right now it sounds like it is a paperweight. Since you've been into it before, what have you got to lose? I'd tear it completely down and reassemble and examine the parts as I go. Something's disconnected or fried. If nothing else it will impress your wife and show her how much you care and want to help her. Who knows, you might get lucky and it will actually work one way or another.

My wife's iphone 3GS was fully charged and suddenly went dead. Tried connecting the charger and keeping the power button depressed with no response. Tried another charger with nothing. Then kept the power and home buttons simultaneously depressed and after a while the apple sign came on the screen. This remained for quite a while and eventually returned to a fully functional phone.
