The larger of Apple's MacBook Air laptops featuring dual microphones and 802.11ac Wi-Fi connectivity.

I installed a new SSD and disk utility is not recognizing it.

Steps I've done so far.

  • Erase the SSD and reformatted to Mac journal.
  • Install OS Mountain Lion from internet recovery.
  • Installed my time machine backup to the SSD from an external hard rive.
  • Unplugged and plugged in the SSD to check if it was seated properly.

Everything was working fine until I opened the laptop from standby then it froze and shut off.

Now all it does when the computer boots up is go to a black screen with the folder/question mark. If I boot it up in recovery mode it only goes to internet recovery and does not show the SSD.

Any advice?

Who's SSD did you put in? A few pics of the labels on your original and replacement SSD's would help.

I took out the original SSD that was installed in the MacBook Air from Apple and installed an OWC

Did you get the Envoy enclosure with it?

The only thing the envoy inside the box said was that this SSD was incompatable with Boot Camp Assist.

What is throwing me off about this is the new SSD worked perfectly for hours after I installed it. It only stopped working after I put the computer to sleep and started it up again after sitting overnight.

I know that I personally had a bad experience with an OWC SSD for my 2012 Air. The controller started flaking out and I had similar issues where the on-SSD firmware was telling the computer to unmount the boot drive, which lead to system freezes almost every hour.

I would try installing the original one and seeing if you can mount the OWC replacement as an external disk. Even if you didn't get the envoy enclosure (I don't blame you, it's stupid expensive), you can find adapters on eBay.
