Fan stuck at idle

Hi everyone,

I have upgraded my iMac (iMac Intel 27" EMC 2546) with an SSD and unlike most people my fan is actually stuck at idle, no matter the work load. Thus it's overheating.

I can watch the temperature rise on the cpu and yet the fan stays at 1200 RPM.

Initially I thought it might be because I had not installed the optional HD temp sensor, so I bought and installed one. Still no luck. I tried a couple fan controlling apps, and Mac Fan Control was able to change the fan speed, but I can't understand why it's not working on it's own...

Anyone experience anything similar or have any ideas on what I should do?

Thanks

what 'optional sensor' have you used in your machine? as there is no HD sensor in the Late 2012 models. You either have to fit an apple drive with the right firmware on it, or use an OWC in line sensor cable to have the fan speed adjusted.

On the 2009-2011 models it is referred to as the 'runaway fan' issue, but in reality, the fault is the same on the 2012-2015 model, but its more that the fan doesn't function as it should. so the issue you're seeing seems similar.

Also, can you please confirm that you are referring to replacing the 3.5" SATA drive with a 2.5" SATA SSD, and not one of the PCIe blade type SSDs, as this model can take both.

If you have removing the 3.5" SATA drive and fitted an SSD to that bay using a 2.5" to 3.5" caddy or adapter, you'll need the OWC in line sensor to get the fan to operate properly, as found here:

(buy from OWC in the states if you are state side)

I hope this helps
