The March 2015 update of Apple's 13" MacBook Pro Retina Display, model A1502, features fifth-generation Intel Core i5 and i7 processors and introduces the Force Touch trackpad.

A1493 battery compatible in MacBook Pro Retina 13" 2015?

Got a MacBook Retina 13" 2015 which needs a battery replacement. I ordered a 3rd party battery which was claiming it was an A1582 battery, for the 13" Retina 2015 (since it is difficult to get this in the UK quickly), however the part number on the battery received is A1493, like the old 2013-2014 models (although the outer packaging says it is compatible for 2013/2014/2015 models).

My question is, will this work in the 2015 model? Is there any harm in trying? I have tried emailing the seller (Duracell) to check, and they have since removed A1582 from the title on their website, and not responded to me haha.

I would assume if the battery have the same form factor and same output voltage you shouldn't have much trouble. I would never trust a third party battery unless I purchased from IFIXIT.

crwdns2934271:0crwdnd2934271:0crwdne2934271:0

The output voltage is lower than the original, but it works fine, since the battery board is identical to the 2015 model. I use 3rd party batteries all the time from decent vendors, not the really cheap ones, and have no issues. It guarantees I am getting a brand new battery, rather than an original with a reset battery count :)

Well, I can confirm that I’ve seen random shutdowns AND MORE after installing a A1493 battery in a client’s 2015 Retina.

Personally, I ONLY USE APPLE BATTERIES, but this guy supplied his own parts, and he got what he deserved for not heeding my warning and lost $45 on some Amazon junk, only to turn around and buy the correct one from me.

I’ll say it again: When it comes to power, ONLY USE APPLE.

Some parts like screens, RAM, GPU’s and network cards you can get away with. In fact, there’s often BETTER drives you can upgrade to, but don’t cut corners on power. I’ll take a genuine Apple battery with 600 cycles, rather than a brand new generic one with “whatever” amperage and voltage. Same goes for chargers. Don’t come near my computer without an  logo.

To see guys on THIS FORUM saying “Sure, the amps and volts dont match, but it worked fer me!“ already doesn’t give me confidence, but then admitting to using 3rd party batteries… That’s just shocking. Now I have to take everything you guys say with a grain of salt.

By no means am I doubting your success or trying to rain on your parade. If it’s your personal computer, by all means have at it. I just know that in 19 years of owning computer stores, I’ve seen the sparks fly, the fires and 3rd degree burns to know not to gamble on power in a professional environment. If I caught a manager ordering knock off batteries, that would be the last corner he cut.

Tried this, and can confirm it works fine, although the voltage rating and mAh rating is lower than the 2015 battery, which means it won't last as long.

For future reference, if anyone has issues getting the 2015 batteries :)

@reecee Your tried what? What's for future reference? I didn't answer this as I have not run into a battery replacement yet on a 2015.

crwdns2934271:0crwdnd2934271:0crwdne2934271:0

@mayer the 2013/2014 Macbook Pro Retina 13" batteries work in the 2015 Macbook Pro 13". I'm not sure about the US, but in the UK, there are no sellers for 2015 batteries, even 3rd party ones. You have to order 2015 batteries from China or elsewhere

crwdns2934271:0crwdnd2934271:0crwdne2934271:0

@reecee maybe the search engines in the UK don't work as well as the ones in the US

Thanks @mayer, I found some on eBay, etc shipping from China, but they were due delivery for late March/early April (obviously way longer than the customer wanted to wait).

It's annoying you guys in the US have this part quickly available, over here that is not the case unfortunately :( I'll probably order a few for stock from my China supplier in the summer, so I have them just in case

crwdns2934271:0crwdnd2934271:0crwdne2934271:0

@reecee I understand. It ties up a lot of my working capital to stock parts and batteries in advance and I don't know if the prices will drop while sitting on the shelf. If you have not set up with ifixit for professional pricing, do so. I would think you would do much better, if they have it to try getting parts from the iFixit store in Germany while you are still part of the EU. https://eustore.ifixit.com/en/home/

What I have done, since my customers resent me making any money on parts, is that right in front of them I will open up a different browser(that I'm not logged into) on iFixit. Then I go right to the part and give them the price. At that point you can add a 10-15% handling charge over your cost. Most people understand that you need to be able to make 10-15% and don't mind. Then when ordering, I log it and get my professional discount. iFixit has about 4 tier levels of pricing.

crwdns2934271:0crwdnd2934271:0crwdne2934271:0

You can probably ask @kaykay about where you need to be to get them. I didn't know to ask about it till I gripped about it just last month and I've been around the site for seven years.

Let me know after you've read this as I should probably delete my professional secrets.
