iPhone 5S - Apple Logo, & Black Screen Shows Up Stuck

My dad has this iPhone 5S that had been water damaged for a long time. I cleaned all the parts with 90% isopropyl alcohol. When I boot up the phone, the dead battery logo shows up, then the apple logo and then a black screen until I unplug it, it stops working. What's the issue? Also I tried unplugging the battery port from the motherboard then charging it and booting it, but it still doesn't work. I looked up tutorials and found how I should replace the battery, but I'm not sure that's the issue since it doesn't boot up at all when I charge the phone without the battery plugged in.

The iPhone 5S will not boot up without a battery; it just shows the Apple logo and then restarts again. You need to have a working battery, even if it's not in perfect condition.

Looking at your question...

Also I tried unplugging the battery port from the motherboard then charging it and booting it, but it still doesn't work.

What do you mean by that? Did you take out the battery and charge it independently of the device? That sentence is not clear enough for us to understand.

@oldturkey03 is correct. You need to isolate some variables and work with known-goods, especially with water damaged devices. The fact that iTunes detects your phone tells me the charge port assembly is most likely okay. The battery is an obvious element to replace but because you have very old water damage to the device, I would suspect a logic board issue, most likely the charge circuit.

Did you remove the shields when you cleaned your logic board? If not, that's where 80% of the electronics resides and most likely where the problem is. At that point, you need to de-solder the shields.

So I would try the battery first. Then if that doesn't solve your problem, you should consider a shop that can do micro-soldering repairs to do the diagnostic for you.

@iapple change the battery first. Even if it does not have the desired result, at least it will provide a known-well starting point for further troubleshooting. Water damaged devices are the toughest to diagnose and repair since virtually any part may have failed.

@oldturkey03 shouldn't it still boot up even if I plug in the charger without the battery plugged in the logic board?

crwdns2934271:0crwdnd2934271:0crwdne2934271:0

@iapple not necessarily. I've had a few that did not. I am sure you are suspecting yourself that the battery is toast anyway; go ahead replace it.

crwdns2934271:0crwdnd2934271:0crwdne2934271:0

@oldturkey03 Is there a proper way to diagnose this? I don't want to waste money on a battery and not be sure if it'll even work or not...

crwdns2934271:0crwdnd2934271:0crwdne2934271:0

@iapple you will have to use the schematic and board layout and check the power rails for shortcircuits etc. Again, at this point you do not know which point is good. A new battery will give you that starting point.

@oldturkey03 I've tried to put the device in DFU mode, with the battery plugged in, itunes detected the device. When I clicked restore, I got an error 2002 and error 2006. Does this help confirm the issue or would it still be considered unknown?
