Where can I purchase parts for the nest 2nd generation thermostat?

Does anyone know where can I get the base motherboard for a Nest 2nd generation?

There's a couple of complete part sets on eBay, here's one on the seconds generation: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Used-Working-Con...

Problem is the complete unit is $50 less http://www.ebay.com/itm/NEST-Learning-Th...

The best chance of you finding what you need is to look for one on eBay. There are many that are not working and are sold for parts. Nest does not sell the individual parts. Very frustrating. Some get lucky giving Nest a call, but they are very uncooperative .... I couldn't find the circuit board anywhere, I gave up. After a month I found my missing piece all dusted on top of a paint can.. waiting for me... calling my name. I valued every piece of nest like if they were made out of gold from then on. I will not buy any Nest devices in the future.

Hi,

You may have to contact Nest to see if replacement parts are even available.

Here is a link.

https://nest.com/support/contact-us/

You are probably aware of this but the motherboards between the different 'generations' are not interchangeable.

I tried to find a replacement part on eBay and other sites. No success. Called customer support after I read your post and they declined to sell me a replacement but offer a coupon for an upgrade.

My Nest is working perfectly but now it's a paperweight. How long did you have your nest before losing the base? They wont sell you or give you a replacement part no matter what you do if you're past the two year warranty.

I have the same problem. I have a bad W1 wire terminal and wanted to get replacement base. Nest told me not possible to order replacement parts now that it is outside of the warranty. I know they have the parts but think that its ridiculous they can't offer them to customers in need of them, they only offer you 20% coupon towards buying a new one. How does a device advertised to save you money not allow you to actually save anything if you have to spend $200+ each time you need to fix it. Anyone found a way to get replacement parts?

crwdns2934271:0crwdnd2934271:0crwdne2934271:0

I found the lost base, will value it like it's a royal jewel. Lesson learned, I hope it never gets damaged. If I ever need to replace thermostat or need an extra one I know for sure it won't be a Nest.

crwdns2934271:0crwdnd2934271:0crwdne2934271:0

This practice of withholding parts and forcing you to buy a new unit for $200+ seems ripe for a class action.

This is an annoying problem. The sensor that tells my Gen 2 thermostat that the ring is being turned failed. Everything about the Nest requires you to spin the ring, from turning up the heat to navigating the menu. Nest offered me the same 20% coupon because of my problem. 20%. I can find the Nest on sale at several web sites with a discount better than 20%.

Any thermostat should work for decades, not 24 months. And a thermostat that costs $250 should have a warranty for longer than 2 years.

After two calls to Nest support they say my base unit has gone bad and that I need a new one, no they don't just sell that part I have to buy a whole new Nest Thermostat but they will give me a 20% discount if I buy if from their store. Why would I spend more than $200 to but a device that breaks after a few years from a company that really does not care about their customers. My old cheap thermostat was still going strong 14 years after I put it in. I only repklace it to upgrade to the Nest. Now I will be finding a product by a company that can make something that lasts more than a few years and who supports their customers.

Just had my furnace cleaned, no wires touched, just regular maintenance, and after the technician left, the Nest Gen 2 registered a 10 degree higher ambient temperature than it actually is. After an hour chatting with a Nest technician, they offered me a 20% coupon as well. After some troubleshooting on my own, I disconnected the Yellow wire (air) on the base motherboard (to the Y port) and after a few minutes the temperature started dropping. I called back the HVAC technician who remarkably came back out to check if there was anything he could have done to cause it, but all the wires in the furnace were properly going to the right terminals there, matching the thermostat's wiring. The ONLY difference being that before the technician came, the humidifier was not working properly and now it is, but the wiring was not changed. The two white wires and the yellow wire (fan, humidifier and air) are all attached to the C terminal. Maybe there's a possibility that the humidifier actually working now is causing the issue, but it seems doubtful. I'm planning on keeping the yellow wire disconnected for now and shopping around for a new thermostat. Any suggestions? I can't afford to buy a new Nest every few years, and since they won't sell me just the motherboard, that seems like the only option.

crwdns2944067:02crwdne2944067:0:

I literally have the exact same issue! I came home to find the outdoor A/C compressor running, the home very cold and the Nest registering a temperature about 10 degrees higher. My Nest is running a software version of 5.6.6-4, last updated on January 23rd. I'm really hesitant to buy a new one because they don't seem to last nearly as long as they should and I'm not convinced this issue is fixed in the 3rd generation.

crwdns2934271:0crwdnd2934271:0crwdne2934271:0

Follow up: After much time on the phone with the Nest technician, he finally agreed to ship me a new back piece at no charge, even though my Nest was no longer under warranty. I have two systems in my house, and I had replaced the earlier Nest back piece a couple of years ago. That one was under warranty. Now both Nests are working fine, but I am just waiting for one or the other of them to go funky on my again. I'm going to do some thorough research on the 3G to see if it has the same issues before I replace the next one that fails.

I had the same problem with my 2nd gen base plate w1 shorted out. I called nest went through the steps to check it and they are over fighting me a whole new 2nd gen and prepaid label to send the old one back. I guess I got lucky. Still live nest.

Thanks everybody, I have similar issue and after a long troubleshooting I found the Y terminal (A/C compressor in my house) was always on, even if my Nest (2nd generation) is off. The heater (W) and fan (G) works fine, and the Nest was working for several years without issue. I read that it could be a faulty C wiring so I add a another wire to reinforce the C (common) signal just in case, but nothing change, the Y is always on even if I remove the face-plate.

I was looking to replace the (I think) faulty backplate-2.7 when I stumble into this forum. Now I now that I have to replace the thermostat (which of course will be another brand, it’s not cheap to replace it every 3 years!).

Quite an interesting discussion. I just replaced my 3rd Nest thermostat. (I have 5 HVAC systems in my house). The HVAC technician had one in his truck. He said he replaces at least 1 a week. The failure mode for me was exactly the same as above, the Y terminal was shorted. Unfortunately I did not see this thread until after I paid a technician for a service call and a replacement thermostat.

What is really surprising is that people like me still buy another. If I was not so heavily invested, I would buy a different brand. I put my thermostat up there with the furnace, water heater, plumbing and electrical systems that need to last longer than 2 years. (maybe 10, but hopefully 15) I am thinking now that we will all be screwed when WPA3 requires wholesale replacement of all our modern Smarthome appliances. I am posting this in hopes that others learn from my mistakes and they buy something a little cheaper since the apparent lifetime on these things is relatively short. I am reasonably sure with Nest’s apparent attitude that they will phase out Gen 3 for Gen 4 to support WPA3. Perfect business model.

Update (11/23/2018)

Although I solved my problem above, to the gain of Nest, I will tell you that I voted with my wallet. Nest won’t get any more of my business. I am sure I am just a tiny part of their ecosystem, but when it came time to buy video doorbells, I bought three for my main residence and two for our weekend house. Further, I was so impressed with the video doorbells I bought, I bought an alarm and several other “toys” from the other guys. They may turn out just as bad as Nest, but the way I look at it, our friends at Nest missed a couple of thousand dollars and two annual subscription services from me. And even more fun, I’m on the HOA Security committee and guess which video solutions I am recommending?

crwdns2944067:02crwdne2944067:0:

No me! I learnt my lesson. I called Nest and the technician I talked with, after a long troubleshooting, agreed with me that the back-face was at fault, nothing they can do about it. I have to buy a new Nest yes or yes. On a side note, Nets customer service is one of the best, very polite and knowledgeable.

Anyway, I replaced with another brand..let see how it goes.

Good point about WPA3. It's coming soon. But I do expect that WPA2 will continue to be used. Some routers still support WEP, even though it's really not a secure encryption.

This won’t help people with repairs, but I just have to brag about my luck. :-) I was browsing through a big flea market (does flea market translate in other countries?). I bought a couple of cheap tools that I needed . . . then I came across a typical table with some junk, and there I saw it. A Gen2 Nest! I picked it up and it even had the base attached. I asked the guy if it worked, and he replied: “what is that thing anyway?”. I can’t even tell you how cheap it was. I paid the guy and headed for home, plugged in the USB cable, and it works. I haven’t installed it because I replaced my failed Gen2 with a Nest E that was on sale for $129. But now I have a spare Nest for when it inevitably fails.

Even though I’m angry about the Nest policy of not selling parts, I have to say the Nest E is good. It’s missing some features, but it has what I need. The display is not high-resolution, but it’s good enough.

My 2nd generation Nest Learning thermostat failed last night with the heater running regardless of Nest setting….troubleshot this morning to reveal a failed base. With the Nest removed from the base, the heater kept running full time and only stopped running once the red wire was removed (in order to allow a normal shutdown cycle, with burner OFF, followed by the normal fan run-on before shutdown). Replacing the Nest with a known good thermostat results in a fully functional heater again. FWIW, the Gen2 Nest was put into service eight years ago and has worked flawlessly until last night.

Calling the Nest Support phone number led me to a Philippines-based call center and a VERY helpful CSR….she listened to my trouble-shooting process, checked to see if there were any replacement base parts available in their system, and then took my shipping info to send an out-of-warrantee Gen2 base at no cost. We’ll see if it is the correct part once it arrives…..if so, I’m a happy guy!

So just maybe having Google take over the Nest Support role has brought an improvement to the system?
