Display backlight doesn't work

Hi, I have a Powerbook G4 A1107 (the low res 17" model) with a display backlight that doesn't work. I'm figuring it is either the CCFL or the Inverter. Is there any way to tell short of, a) purchasing a $100 inverter board and plugging it in, or b) cracking open the Display to see if the bulb is burnt?

The computer has had no other issues, there was no prior flickering before the backlight died, the cables seem in good condition and have good connections, and the display is visible when a lamp or flashlight is placed behind it.

the display is visible with another light source behind. It also works fine with external displays through both the DVI and S Video ports.

Whiles it's booted up hold a flashlight at an angle to the screen and see if you can see the desktop. Also hook up to an external monitor to test the video chip and let us know.
