What caused the battery to be replaced? There is battery management system that detects the voltage and control the charging system. I cannot give you exact solution unless there is some more information. I assume it might have some liquid contact to have the battery circuit to become like that or try to unplug the battery and the magsafe.
After the computer is off without any power source, push the power button once.
1) Push down the power button
2) Connect the magsafe
3) Release the power button after 10 seconds let the system boot in high fan.
4) Shut it off and unplug the power source
5)Connect the battery and plug in the charger
Lets see if it works. I might take a while to get back to the answer but that is a simple way to test or diagnose if there is no liquid contact.

Was the mag-safe light working on the swollen battery?

Thanks for the reply. Somehow missed notification. Magsafe was/is working, but shows Green and power menu says "power source: power adaptor". I was expecting Yellow for charging, but it's still not seeing the battery after being plugged in all night.
