Can I retrieve files from an iPod?

I have a 3rd Gen Nano, 8GB. On it I have several music and video files I would like to transfer to my computer's hard drive. In iTunes, I can only transfer purchases from the iTunes Store.

Is there a way of retrieving files from an iPod? Can I make it appear in Finder as an external volume?

If you have the finder configured to show hidden files you can also easily drag and drop music/other files that are on your iPod, however to use it as a HD, follow Miroslav Djuric's advice.
