Won't boot up completely

When I start up the computer, I get the apple and the spinning ball. It spins for a couple minutes then restarts the computer. Over and over and never completely boots up.

Try a safe

(shift) boot. If that works run Utilities->Disk Utilities-> Disk First Aid->Verify Disk, & Repair Permissions

Thanks for the tip. I tried it but the machine won't do anything but spin for a couple minutes then restarts on it's own - over and over. Any other ideas?

Nope - you could try to recover any important data (that should be on a backup but isn't). However it will cost a lot of money for recovery applications, your time, and the data may not be recoverable.

I have recently used Data Rescue 3 on a mac and was able to recover data to an external, you have to decide wether the data is worth the expense of this kid of software.

Running Disk Utilities from the disk you're trying to repair does not work well. It's kind of like working on a car engine while driving down the road. Start up from your system installation disk. Go to the second page pull down menu to Utilities - Disk Utilitiy and see if you can repair the drive.

Disk utilities from the Software reinstall disk says the hard drive has encountered a fatal error. Looks like a new hard drive is in order. Thanks for the info.
