The vibrator can be replaced individually, but most places sell it as a part of the back panel due to shipping costs. Buy a back and remove the vibrator to install it in your phone.
The guide to install it can be found here.

Here is the guide for replacing it, but I don't believe iFixit sells the vibrator itself, I know on the 3G it was attached to the headphone jack, but I don't think it is so for the S. You'll have to look elsewhere for that.

Can anyone tell me how to remove the vibrator switch from the metal housing it's in? The original looks like a rivet because the back looks like a mushroom. The new switch which is part of the flex has the two legs but they are straight. Do I need to solder them or do anything else once I stick the new switch flex to the housing?

mikev0521, it would be better for you to ask your own question. this one here has had no answer for 8month. your question shows up as an answer. I am certain that there are plenty of knowledgeable people out there that are going to help you, if they see you are asking. Good Luck
The vibration switch is actually a part of the headphone jack assembly. Here is the part and here is the guide for the replacement
Hope this helps!
