Can't arm via remote and once armed I can't take off

If I'm connected to the apm 2.8 via usb I can arm via my remote, but if I'm not connected the motors will not arm. Also once armed and disconnected from the computer, the quad will not take off. I have switched the propellers, synced the escs, what can I do to remedy this?
