Won't boot up correctly

When I turn on my iMac during the boot up process I only see the spinning wheel and nothing further. Is there a hard drive or a software issue?

If you get a Blue, or Grey Screen after the Spinning Logo, there may be some problem with your Graphics Card, or if it just keeps Spinning, try formatting your iMac.

Thanks how would formatting fix a graphics issue wouldn't it need a graphics card. I'm new with macs so I'm thinking out of a windows mindset. As I'm learning these Macs

It generally happens iMac gets stuck at the Spinning wheel,

So to easily diagnose it try to reinstall the operating system first and if it still doesnt work theres definately a issue with the GPU
