Sort of. You can't save the file on the launcher screen, but there are ways to access and store word documents on your phone.
If you have a Google account you can access documents saved to your Google Drive through the Google Docs app. If you prefer using Office, Microsoft makes an Office Suite app as well.
There are also third party applications like OfficeSuite 8 which don't require a Microsoft or Google account.
