New battery won't charge

In my Ipod classic 3rd generation, I replaced the battery but it won't charge. The small charge that the neww battery came with is gone and it will not recharge?

Have you charged it before? Has it worked with the old battery? You are using firewire to charge it? Just to make sure, it is a 3rd gen iPod?
