White laptop working screen - working normal on external display

Hi,

When I turn on my MBP A1260 the screen is white, nothing is displayed but the white color.

If I connect an external display, I can see my extended desktop and everything seems to work fine (except that I cannot see the content on my desktop as it is on the white screen).

How can I fix the display issue?

Thanks

Axel

Unless you work for iFixit, I would suggest changing your sign on name as it is misleading. - vote for the name.

Another good test is to boot it, wait for a few minutes, push the power button again, and then push enter. If it shuts off, the problem lies in the display, more specifically the display data cable or LCD panel.

I've sent in two MBP's in the last month with the NVIDA issue. Just call Support and give them the serial number and they'll tell you if it qualifies.

On one I got nothing on an external, the second I got green strips in the boot up Apple and then it locked. From my first reports to a repaired Mac in hand was 4 days on each one.

I think I found the issue:

http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2377

Symptoms

In July 2008, NVIDIA publicly acknowledged a higher than normal failure rate for some of their graphics processors due to a packaging defect. At that same time, NVIDIA assured Apple that Mac computers with these graphics processors were not affected. However, after an Apple-led investigation, Apple has determined that some MacBook Pro computers with the NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT graphics processor may be affected. If the NVIDIA graphics processor in your MacBook Pro has failed, or fails within four years of the original date of purchase, a repair will be done free of charge, even if your MacBook Pro is out of warranty.

What to look for:

  • Distorted or scrambled video on the computer screen
  • No video on the computer screen (or external display) even though the computer is on

Specific products affected:

  • MacBook Pro 15-inch and 17-inch models with NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT graphics processors

o MacBook Pro (17-Inch, 2.4GHz)

o MacBook Pro (15-Inch, 2.4/2.2GHz)

o MacBook Pro (Early 2008)

  • These computers were manufactured between approximately May 2007 and September 2008

no, thats a differnet problem - this problem would affect the internal and an external display. normally it is a connection problem or the lcd is toast - but my first guess would also be in the direction of connector/cable

Thanks for your tips. I tried it but it did not fix the issue.

The laptop works, I mirrored the internal and external screens. Thus I can use it.

But even if I can set the brightness of the internal screen, it does not display anything.

The apple customer care said it is not the NVIDIA issue unfortunately.

They said the screen has to be changed.

Any advice?

i would always say that you should support ifixit. but that would depend where you're coming from.

use ebay and you will find the right lcd screen that fit's your model

Please start your own question as your issue may be on a different GPU and the answer may be totally different. Thanks

I have the same problem... I put in a new hard drive with Lion, a new LCD with cables, and its still shows a white screen. But the external is working fine. I even moved all the parts to another Mac, lcd and etc. They worked fine... I'm lost here.. I do get a error saying color profile is incorrect...
