Second generation of iPhone. Model A1241 / 8 or 16 GB capacity / black or white plastic back. Repair is more straightforward than the first iPhone. requires screwdrivers, prying, and suction tools.

(New) Battery Won't Charge

After the battery in my iPhone 3G failed, I ordered a new one (from iFixIt, natch) and promptly installed it. The iPhone booted and the battery appears to be half charged. When I plug the iPhone into power (Apple cable, Apple charger) I get this dialog:

"This accessory is not made to work with this iPhone - Do you want to turn on Airplane mode..."

...and the iPhone doesn't charge (no lightening bolt on the battery icon).

Did I goof something on the battery install? Or is this a sign of another problem with the iPhone?

Thanks for any help!

Take a look at this. Apologies for the image rotation but i couldn't be bothered rotating it. On the bottom is a 3GS battery and on the top a 3G. You can tell the difference by looking at the voltage (circled).

If you replace an iPhone 3G battery with a 3GS battery and vice versa, you will inevitably have issues with the overall functionality of the phone.

+ martin, your voltage on the batteries is actually the same. The difference in your picture shows the Watt per hr being 4.51Whr for the 3Gs. You are right, they are different batteries of course.

Try redoing the installation.

re-did the battery install from scratch, cleaned the contacts on both sides the battery, double checked the connection from the dock connector to the main board, etc. Really took my time with it. And, alas, no worky. Still getting the "this accessory is not made to work with this iPhone" (apple cable and charger).

Any ideas?

Thank you,

jason

I also cleaned out the dock connector port (on the phone) and even tried cleaning the contacts on the dock connector inside the phone and -- no worky :( HELP!

Well you can try replacing the dock connector, could be a bad logic board though.

Are you sure you got a 3g battery and not a 3gs battery as they are different, It's a common mistake.
