Could I replace the keyboard only? Not the entire upper case?

I own a Macbook pro13'' Retina Late 2012, unfortunate, the keyboard doesn't work now. At the beginning, only "A" doesn't, one week later, about 10 keys in the same row don't work.

I went to an apple store to fix my problem, the stuff ask me $500 to replace the entire upper case because my device was out of warranty period. This is really too much for me.

Then I decided to replace the keyboard by myself. Before the work, I want to ask if it is possible to replace only the keyboard? not the entire upper case? Is it possible to isolate the keyboard with other parts of the upper case?

Hope someone could answer my question, thank you so much!

Keyboard replacements in the Retina MacBooks are a bit of a beast. Unfortunately I can't find any 13"-specific chatter. Here's a (rather scary) youtube guide for a 15" keyboard replacement, I say scary because it looks like the battery control board gets a little banged around (and be sure to remove the screws he forgot). With some scouting you might be able to see how well the process will work on a 13".

There's also an Answers thread here that talks about the replacement in the 15" and mentions the 13" as well. The other challenge will be to find the replacement keyboard by itself.

Hopefully that information is of use to you! Best of luck!

Hi Sam, great appreciate for your help, I will watch the video and do some basic research about MacBook retina 13. Hope 13 and 15'' are the same thing.

I have already bought the keyboard and decide to replace it on this Saturday. Wish me luck!

Good luck! Good slowly and carefully. You can always troubleshoot here, hopefully there will be some active members while you're doing your repair =)

Why don't you take pictures and notes of the process and create a IFIXIT guide for others to follow :-)
