Does not wake up from sleep

I have an iMac 27 mid 2001 that does not wake up from sleep. The machine stays on, fans, hard disk ok. The screen stays black once the LCD goes to sleep.

I guess is LCD, but not sure.

The solution I found is to reconnect the display data cable and since a couple of days everything seems to be ok.

Do you have access to an external monitor you can plug in? If you do give that a try. If you don't have a monitor and have access to a second mac see if you can access it via a network connection.
