Upgrade HD: 256GB SSD vs 500GB Hybrid SSD?

i currently have a 320GB HDD (using an average of 100GB) and wanted to upgrade to an SSD (faster, quieter)

which would be a better upgrade for me:

256GB SSD (for $220 on ifixit, $130 on crucial)

or

500GB Hybrid SSD (for $120 on ifixit, $80 on crucial)

thanks

Are you confusing things here? HD Vs SSD? A hybrid drive (SSHD) combines both into one device.

Yes, SSD's are the faster in Read/Write access but at a price. The amount of storage they have is less than HD's and are costly.

And yes, SSD's are quieter than HD's. But most of the issue is dependent on what you are doing. Running heavy CPU/Graphics applications are big creators of heat which then causes the fans to fire up to full cooling which I suspect is your noise issue not the heat of the HD alone.

As to which is the better direction going with a straight SSD Vs a SSHD?

A SSHD gives you a more balanced solution by combining both the SSD and a HD into a single hybrid drive. So you gain the speed of the SSD and the storage space of the HD.

At one point we took the optical drives out of our laptops so we could add in a second drive (SSD) to gain the the speed of the SSDs and still have the storage space a HD offers. Now with SSHD's we get it in one device. All our non-retina Mac Book Pros have since been upgraded to SSHD units.

Hard drives transfer around 50-90 MBps. SSDs transfer around 500 MBps. They are literally ten times faster.

Hard drives in general belong in the trash, besides archival storage. They serve no purpose as an operating system drive. Think of it like this, in 2005 RAM could move data at 3200 megabytes per second. In 2015, a $100 SSD can move data at 500 MBps. Modern SSDs are still 6x behind where every other part of the computer was **TEN**YEARS**AGO** !!!! Modern SATA SSDs are STILL unacceptably slow and not caught up with every other part of the computer, but at the very least one must have an SSD to not have a painful user experience.

Everytime I meet people who are "ok" with a hard drive it is usually someone who is ok checking their phone, reading the paper, or making coffee while their machine loads something. Who has time for that anymore?
