N5010 - 8 beeps. Screen won't turn on

Hello.

I've had my N5010 for almost 3 years now, and lately I've come across some problems, which peaked with the last one - dead monitor apparntly.

It started with overheating problems sometime ago, then 2-3 weeks ago whenever I turned on the laptop it wouln't boot or show anything, meaning it would turn on, the lights were on but there were no beeps of signs of boot or any display (well, screen backlight was actually going on but it was still dark), What I did whenever that happend was letting the battery dry out and then would plug it to the power supply and turn it on, usually worked.

Then, about a week ago, it stopped working all together - whenever I turn it on, the screen stays black and after a few seconds the laptop starts to beep 8 times over and over again until I shut it down. I've read online that 8 beeps means there's a problem with my screen or something like that.

I've tried connecting it to an external monitor yesterday and it does work.

What are my options? My warranty runs out in about 2-3 weeks - thing is, my keyboard broke couple of months ago and I replaced it at my own expanse in a private shop - does it void the warranty? and does the warranty covers this at all? I just don't want to send it all the way to the lab when there's a possibility they won't even fix it either because warranty doesn't cover it or because warranty was voided...

Thanks in advanced! :)

Try by turning laptop off and disconnect the screen cable from motherboard . hook up and external monitor then turn laptop on and if laptop turns on with no beeps with external monitor it means you have a bad monitor screen on your laptop. If you have a bad screen even though it looks ok but with a white screen and passes test it could still be a bad screen. It worked for me on my dell inspirion n4110

8 beeps problem is lcd failure problem

crwdns2934271:0crwdnd2934271:0crwdne2934271:0

I had one laptop with the same problem. I did reflow the GPU, now its working fine.

crwdns2934271:0crwdnd2934271:0crwdne2934271:0

Aman Nadaf: let me ask you. how do i reflow the motherboard because i have one with the same problem

crwdns2934271:0crwdnd2934271:0crwdne2934271:0

8 beeps sometimes mean the fan is not working or the vga cable is loose. open it up and push the vga cable in tight

Moish, you are right. 8Beeps is usually a LCD or cable failure. Try this first :

"If the LCD on the system does not show any display, here are some basic steps that you can perform:

Remove the battery and AC Adapter from the laptop and press the power button down for about 10-15 seconds to release flea power.

Power up the system and then press the F12 key during the boot process to get to the Boot Menu, if you are able to see the display.

It may be necessary to repeatedly press the key during the start-up process.

Use the up and down arrow keys to select <Diagnostics> on the menu and press the Enter key.

Or

Hold down the Fn (function) key

Power on the notebook

You should then see the Dell logo screen with the message 'Diagnostic boot selected' in the top corner.

You can then release the keys

While the LCD BIST test runs, the LCD is operating on its own, free of the video controller, which may be discrete (a video card) or on board (on the system board). The test allows you to distinguish an LCD panel problem from a problem with the controller. If the colors are displayed across the screen without a problem, then the issue is not with the LCD." from here. Should you have a broken LCD, I would contact Dell and talk to them about the warranty issues. It is possible that they still honor the original warranty. If not, then the cost of repair will be yours, but at this point you really have nothing to lose. Hope this helps, good luck.

THEY JUST OPEN LAPTOP AND HEAT UP GPU ON MOTHERBOARD.. The same problem i found in my laptop dell n5010.

8 beeps has many possibilities, check following

1) cable of display if found loose , disconnected then tight or connect in socket

2) if cable is connected well, try external monitor, if it works on external monitor, display is dead, replace it

3) if external monitor not working, and system is running but no display then GPU ball connection with motherboard are melt and disconnected. it can be fixed by various reflow methods

4) if not working above there may be motherboard failure, ask expert and replace if need.

sometimes heat sink pipe (heat pipe ) stop working and so heat can not pe transfer from motherboard to atmosphere, so overheating and motherboard failure such as 8 beeps, disconnected GPU is resulted, heat pipe used by dell and other company have very long life so , 90 to 95% cases have not problem of heat sink pipe.

I REPAIRED MY DELL N5010 WITH SAME PROBLEM....ITS GPU IS OVERHEATED AND BALL(SOLDERING JOINTS FROM GPU WITH MOTHERBOARD ) MELT AND CONNECTION BETWEEN GPU AND MOTHERBOARD LOST. BUT AS DELL PROGRAMMER SETS 8 BEEP FOR BLANK OR BLUE DISPLAY. LAPTOP SHOWING DEAD DISPLAY OR DISPLAY WIRE/CABLE PROBLEM INDICATION. MAIN CAUSE IS THE MINI/MICRO GAP BETWEEN GPU AND HEAT SINK PAD.. HEAT SIN PAD DID NOT IN CONTACT WITH GPU CHIP. SO HEAT DID NOT TRANSFER AND OVERHEATING melt ball(SOLDERING JOINTS FROM GPU WITH MOTHERBOARD ) so connection between GPU and motherboard was lost.. i set my GPU by heating with proper way. do not try yourself without guideline.

Also u can install software speedfan(free download google it), so you can run cooling fan full speed for continuous heat throw from GPU. because dell programmed is set to run on temperature sensor. battery will consume power but it is safe for overheating in such case, and you need to set speed manually every time when starting laptop or after sleep mode, otherwise fan will not run and motherboard will damaged that can not repaired.

my laptop is 5 year old, still its running good. dell products are good.

For some reason this always works for me. After turning on your laptop you MUST uninstall graphic card driver and install a safe version. :)

crwdns2934271:0crwdnd2934271:0crwdne2934271:0

what meant by safe version graphic card please explain ??

crwdns2934271:0crwdnd2934271:0crwdne2934271:0

In other words do not install beta graphic drivers, instead use WHQL: Windows Hardware Quality Logo. It is Recommended.

crwdns2934285:0crwdne2934285:0

I have faced with that problem many times in last 2-3 years. I've tried many things that almost all the written in that site. No any hardware soldered or replaced since that problem started. But only the BATTERY was replaced. I noticed that this problem was disappeared when battery was new but after 1-2 years it come back again. Then suddenly i decided to unplug the BATTERY and powered-on the system and it fixed. I think ,There is voltage level or fluctuation problem occuring on the mainboard(or around the graphic card side) when the OLD BATTERY is plugged. Now i'm using laptop without battery and without any problem!!!!!

Please try and share result with us. Thanx

Before doing anything, try this. It worked for me.

Connect to an external screen (hdmi or vga)

spam F2

Reset your BIOS to factory

save and restart

mine booted on the laptops screen rather than the external after that.

Before getting that fix I tried taking out the battery and power together and also just opening and closing the lid a lot (which for some reason worked at one point) this problem seems persistent though, along with the overheating....

My inspirons 8 beep issue was resolved when its graphic card is realigned in its position. as we know inspirons with graphic card generates lot of heat which in turn un mounts graphic card form its chip. best precaution is stop playing games and use heat sink pads.

Hi

I have read the above posts and tried the D+power button method and few others but to no avail.

I dont know how to access the motherboard and GPU, etc but i did replug the RAM once. Nothing has worked so far.

I get a white screen when i turn on the laptop and 8 beeps ofcourse.

Could anyone suggest any solution or do i have to take it to a computer repair shop ?

Thanks
