won't connect to my PC (mass storage problem)

my galaxy doesn't go to mass storage mode anymore. Initially i thought it was a virus, i spoke to a friend a he said it was the port, i don't know if it can be fixed by restoring to factory settings. i'm gonna miss my software's.... answers please.... i need all the help i can get.... please guys....thanks
