Where is my oil going.

When I was on a long trip my 92' sportster lifter rods started knocking. upon inspection there was no oil in oil bag . adding a little oil and restarting all of a sudden all the oil returned to oil bag plus the oil i added overflowing out of bag. then the knocking started to subside. The bike seemed to come back to normal. I'm afraid during this episode I did some damage. Will this happen again? What should I look for?

I would do an oil change to make sure the oil system was clean and clear--link provided. Good luck.
