Has anybody ever replaced JUST the backlight on the keyboard? I suffered a spill (of an undiapered 1 year old's peepee) and now the keyboard lights don't turn on. EBay has some chinese sellers offering backlights supposedly for my mid-2009 model. The machine's not worth $300 to me for a new top case, especially since the keyboard still works fine.

Yes search eBay for MacBook pro keyboard backlight they are cheap but you need to take out logic board and optical drive to do so. I just did this on my MacBook pro 2010 ( also replaced keyboard but backlight is a separate black sheet behind keyboard) there aren't even screws involved with just replacing the keyboard backlight. Keep in mind that most likely your keyboard is water damaged and that will just get worse over time. The first thing you should do is make sure your keyboard backlight connector is fully connected and clean. Also try resetting PRAM, SMC and repair your disk permissions in disk utility. Try all those first before disassembling your computer, because you risk breaking more things. Good luck!

Also note the photo eye circuit under the speaker grill that controls the backlight may have been damaged.
See if you can manually enable the keyboard back light as well as see if it is damaged.

You can use the LabTick tool to bypass the ambient light check to force the backlight to go on, if it does not work then chances are the backlight is really busted.
