One part left over

I just completed the battery and earphone jack replacement. To my surprise, everything seems to be working. I found a 3/4 x 1/4 inch, gray, pillow like thing during disassembly. I did not find a photo of it in the repair instructions and I could not figure out where it could have gone. I reassembled the unit without that item. Do you think that will be okay?

That would be one of the rubber bumpers that go on the hard drive. You don't need it on to have the iPod working, but it's probably good to have it in so that the hard drive is nice and secure.

Thank you. But where does it go, exactly?

At the bottom near the hard drive. They are blue in these pictures but it's the same thing: iPod 5th Generation (Video) Hard Drive Replacement

It's either that like in the picture Joe posted the link to, or it might be the bumpers that go along the side of the hard drive like here:

(The one in the above picture is missing the pad on the lower left side, which might be the one you're missing?)

It's not necessary, but like Joe said I'd suggest putting it back on to keep the hard drive safe from getting bumped around.
