dan, BMW first did away with transmission dip sticks, due to the usage of "lifetime oil" there are ways to check it, but it is not easy. "The transmission "check" is the fill plug accessed from under the car, there is a procedure for it being at a certain temp, car running, etc.

-Car must be level
-Drive vehicle to warm up ATF to operating temp. Fluid must be at 85-120F temp. Connect BMW diagnostic scan tool DISplus, MoDiC, GT1 or equiv to determine fluid temp.
-With engine running, switch on A/C to increase idle speed, apply parking brake
-With foot on brake firmly move gear shift selector through all gears, pausing briefly in each gear.
-Raise vehicle
-With engine running and gear in PARK, remove filler plug. If small stream runs out level is correct. If none trickles out level is low.
