Was able to twist off the cup by removing the rubber bottom, gluing the unit to a compressed board with some wood glue, letting it dry for a couple days, then twisting it off. Note that your instinct will be to twist counterclockwise, but you need to twist clockwise about 10 degrees. The metal post will be there to ensure you don't overtwist.
