A couple of weeks ago I posted a photo of a badly warped icemaker tray. I thought I had warped with heat from a hair dryer. I was wrong. It was not heat. It was impact.
After installing a new $100 icemaker unit 2 weeks ago the unit was working fine until last night when I heard this loud bang. I shut it down. I found the new tray beginning to get warped and I have not been anywhere near it with a hair dryer. What it appears is happening is that sort of a wide icicle is forming hanging from the case above the tray. When the tray tries to flip it hits the ice and you hear the bang and the impact begins to warp the tray. Over time icicles forming and different places cause impact in different places until it looks like my old tray. I remember hearing a bang from time to time but couldn't figure out what caused it.
Now I will try to keep the icicles from forming by covering/insulating the opening from the water line as others have done. What a terrible design.
