Sound not passing through main speakers

I have two denon speakers, a pioneer subwoofer, and a sharp tv connected through my denon avr 391 receiver. Most of the time, if I'm trying to stream through Chromecast, for example, YouTube, the sound is great. I get sound from all three speakers. Sometimes, if I'm trying to stream a movie or tv through Netflix, or Hulu for example, the sound only goes through my subwoofer. It sounds like a garbled mess and usually I can fix it by adjusting the audio to a lower quality ei not 5.1 or Dolby, just stereo sound. But now I'm trying to stream through HBO max, and the app doesn't have the option to downgrade the audio quality. The only feasible option I have is to plug the Chromecast directly into the TV and watch The Last of Us with crappy tv speakers. I was advised by HBO customer support that it might be the HDMI cable that can't carry 5.1 or Dolby audio. Is there any truth to this? Or is there another setup issue possibly going on?
