Just verifying that you tried pressing ''Fn + Spacebar keys'' (both together) a few times to step through the various backlight setting options .i.e. off, low and high, is this correct?

If it still doesn't work try pressing the ''Ctrl + Spacebar keys'' (both together) and check if that works.
