Airpods do not work. Only amber flashing light shows.

I received a pair of airpods from a friend, but they do not work. The only thing that happens is the amber light flashes when I open the case.
They do not connect to the phone.
I tried holding the button for reset. Nothing
I tried cleaning them up. Nothing
I tried charging them. Nothing. Still amber light
Please help
