Has the device been dropped or gotten wet at all?
Try using it as close as possible to your home WiFi router i.e. <15cm and check if it detects and connects to the network.
If it does there may be an antenna problem in the device.
Here's the ifixit [guide|87966] guide that may help.
The single black antenna cable can be seen in the image in Step 4. going from the mounting post on the left side to the motherboard on the right.
