You stated that you fitted a "....new stick of compatible ram.....".

Did you only install the one ram module?

If so the best that I can find is that for this laptop series a ''matched pair'' of modules is required i.e. 2 x 4GB, 2 x 8GB or 2 x 16GB (max).

Perhaps give that a try and see if it works.
