There is a battery soldered in there. I got a lot of Pokémon Gold, Silver and Crystal these days, and 99% of them have depleted batteries. You need to replace this one. It’s a custom CR2025 battery that is soldered on the motherboard. Please order this one: https://www.amazon.com/CR2025-Batteries-Replacement-Battery-Pokemon/dp/B07CSNMKG8
For Pokémon Red, Blue, Yellow, Gold, Silver and Crystal a battery is required to hold the save data. Without battery (or a depleted one) it simply cannot hold any save data, and thus the data is lost.

''Pokémon Yellow, Sapphire, Ruby and Emerald are using a different custom CR1616 battery (smaller one). Those games (except for Pokémon Yellow) the battery is required to harvest berry’s and growing them. Also to encounter Shiny Pokémons. It’s meant for the Real Time Data for the Gameboy Advance Pokémon games. If those batteries are depleted, the save data is not affected as it does use a different way for holding the save data for those games, again this is not applicable for Pokémon Yellow!!)''

***The one in the link (custom CR2025) is the correct battery you need for Pokémon Crystal.***
