I am an electronic engineer/designer with over 35 years experience. A few years ago I helped a friend replace the refrigerator of someone he knew. It was an LG inverter linear compressor French doors+drawer model. Even had Wifi. It was less than 2 years old and the compressor had failed. They had it replaced under warranty, which still cost them $800(that's not much of a warranty), and it failed 2 months later. I was curious about how a $3600 appliance still under warranty was abandoned and useless, so instead of the scrapyard, it went to my house. I put it in the garage and tore into it. I found out that the compressor had not failed electrically. It was bound up mechanically. It seems that the metals used for the linear piston and cylinder are not as compatible with R-134a refrigerant and build up corrosion over time and combined with the "soft start" motor control programming(tries to keep the compressor quiet and efficient by starting it very slowly) makes for a mechanism that isn't very powerful and seizes up rather easily. There is no way to repair it, and a replacement compressor soon suffers the same fate. I did much research and concluded LG should have spent a little longer testing the design before shipping millions of them out into the world. I liked the design otherwise so when I needed a new fridge, I thought that LG had learned about this and surely must have changed their design and made sure that there would be no more compressor problems since this line of refrigerators now had a bad reputation, and I bought one. Brand new side by side with the door in door feature. $2200. A little over 3 years later...guess what? Apparently LG didn't give a $@$* about their reputation, even after losing a class action lawsuit for millions and is still selling their same $@$* design and offering back door refunds to those who figure out how to get one and just keeping quiet about it. I may pursue this, but I sure as hell ain't buying another LG ANYTHING. They really do not care about making people regret ever buying their ill fated products. Really puts an ugly face on a company we had accepted as trustworthy.
