IF I remember rightly I had a similar issue on a MB Air recently and it was something to do with some components from the battery to a going faulty SMC chip. The MB Air would shut down at 80% but didn't show a connected battery in the menu bar...... I think it was this post [post|859108]...  It might be worth trying a total fresh clean install to see if the problem persists.
