No menu when holding down the start button

I bought my bread machine used and the owner plugged it in to show that it works.  However, when I press and hold down the "start/ stop" button,  it doesn't clear and starts mixing.  When I pressed the "menu" to choose my dough setting, nothing came up,  it continued to mix.
