***Under the steering column,*** ''''you'll see there is a squarish rubber/plastic cover, and if you pry that off (it's not hard) you'll get access to the internal workings of the steering wheel.

***There is a small square button*** that you can feel around for (I had to use a good light and some contortionist skills to physically look for it the first couple of times it happened) and once you find it- ***press and hold while you turn your key***. ***''It will release the key with or without power''*** (i.e. battery dead or theft deterrent activated). You can also leave the key in and turn it as long as the button is pressed.

I have not encountered any counter or negative effects as a result of using this mechanism. It's what it's there for.
