How does the pinout of the clickwheel work?

Would it be possible to repurpose the click wheel on an Ipod 7th generation for a homebrew project like [link|https://github.com/syproduction/ipodrpi|this|new_window=true]? I'm not sure how hard it would be to reverse engineer, but if the pinout is the same or similar I think this could be a really cool project!
