All electrical dies when I try to start

The starter had been intermittently getting “stuck” and sometimes I would strike it with a rubber hammer to get it going.  Ok, gonna need a new starter eventually.

Now a new problem (possibly related), when I turn the key to start, everything goes dead, no dash lights, no accessories or anything.  After 10 minutes or so it comes back.  I’ve been compression starting for a few months until I installed new starter today.  Same problem, all goes dead when cranked but returns in 10 minutes or so.  (All dead except for the one “door is open” dash light otherwise all apparent electrical is off)

I’m back to compression starts, I will not be turning the key to star until I figure it out.
