Run the diagnostic test mode t11 to test the defrost feature as described by the manual
Looking at the schematic the defrost heater gets power from control board plug connector J19 pin 2.
Looking at images of the control board (p/n WR55X40448) there's a relay right next to the J19 plug socket, so perhaps it has to operate so that power is extended to the heater when required. It may be worth checking.
